Cathode materials are critical to determining the upper performance limit of lithium-ion batteries. However
single cathode materials cannot meet the multidimensional requirements of energy storage systems in terms of energy density
cycle life
cost
safety
and environmental adaptability. Layered/olivine blended cathode materials combine the high energy density of layered oxides with the high safety and long cycle life olivine phosphate materials
achieving performance complementarity while retaining the intrinsic advantages of each component. As a result
they have become an effective strategy for overcoming this technical bottleneck. This paper systematically reviews recent progress in layered/olivine blended cathode materials. First
it briefly summarizes the crystal structure characteristics and electrochemical behaviors of layered oxides and olivine phosphates. Based on this foundation
it examines key issues such as particle size matching and voltage platform compatibility when these two materials are combined. It also outlines the development history and briefly describes two typical preparation strategies for layered/olivine blended cathode materials. Furthermore
the synergistic mechanisms of the blended system are analyzed from three aspects: interface stability
structural reinforcement
and kinetic optimization. The core contributions of this strategy in suppressing interfacial side reactions
alleviating detrimental phase transitions
and enhancing electrochemical reaction kinetics are also discussed. Specifically
the olivine component helps regulate and stabilize the interfacial behavior of layered materials through physical isolation and interfacial modulation across contact interfaces
active regions
and film-forming layers. Owing to their rigid polyanion framework
these materials provide multidimensional structural reinforcement to the blended system at the atomic
grain
and electrode scales. At the same time
by forming a kinetic synergy with layered materials
they significantly improve the electrochemical reaction kinetics of the electrode in terms of structural basis
thermodynamic equilibrium
and dynamic process. It should be noted that these three mechanisms do not operate in isolation; rather
they interact through coupling and feedback regulation to form a multiscale synergistic enhancement effect
thereby significantly improving the overall electrochemical performance of the blended system. Finally
in view of current energy storage trends
this review discusses the potential of this type of material system in large-scale energy storage and emerging battery systems such as solid-state batteries
summarizing future research directions and development requirements the aim of providing material support and theoretical guidance for next-generation high-performance energy storage batteries.
